Tis the Season for FRAUD…

Whether it's fake checks, bogus products and services, or identity theft, it seems as if there's always someone out there trying to make money at the expense of the “good guys”.

1. If it sounds too good to be true…it probably is too good to be true!

2. Always memorize PIN numbers. Do not write them on cards. hield them when entering and never share passwords or PINs!

3. Carefully review all statements upon receipt. You may limit your liability for unauthorized transactions by reporting them immediately.

4. Only transact online with reputable companies. Look for https in the web address and the secure padlock. Beware that the “bad guys” sometimes re-route you to fictitious websites to steal information. Check out merchants with the Better Business Bureau (http://www.bbb.org/) before transacting. Sign up for MasterCard ® Secure Code ™ and Verified by VISA for extra protection with online transactions.

5. Beware of fake check schemes. They come under many guises. Bogus checks can be used to pay for something you're selling, such as a used car. Or someone might contact you about a "work at home" opportunity or a lottery or sweepstakes that you supposedly won. You may be asked to be a Secret Shopper. Then the “bad guys” might use a fake check to pay you, with instructions to deposit it and then wire a portion of the proceeds to another party, perhaps to pay "required" fees or taxes. In many cases, these scams involve what appear to be certified checks. Before depositing a check from an unfamiliar source, check with the institution whose name appears on it. And because the contact information on the check could belong to the scammer, search for the financial institution's phone number and address separately.

6. Beware of phishing, vishing, spoofing schemes. Scammers use e-mail messages, phone calls, and other ways to trick people into revealing their passwords, credit-card and Social Security numbers, and other personal information they can use to steal identities, open credit lines, and the like. Don't respond to e-mail messages or phone calls asking for your passwords or other personal information, no matter how urgent the appeal or how legitimate it may look. Instead, contact your credit union, bank or other party to see if it made the request.

7. Avoid computer viruses and malware. Keep your computer's antivirus, antiphishing and antimalware software up-to-date. Never click on hyperlinks you receive in e-mail messages until you investigate and never download files from unknown sources or websites.8. Requests to wire funds. A call may come from a family member, perhaps someone who identifies himself as your grandson, saying he needs help. The story might be that he was in an accident or arrested while traveling outside the country and needs you to wire emergency money, often outside of the United States. Don't send money to anyone without verifying his or her identity.

As the holiday season approaches, it is important to be aware of potential scams. Con artists are working hard to get their hands on your money as well as personal and financial information. To help reduce the risk and protect credit union members, we offer a list of potential scams along with tips for a safer and smarter holiday shopping season.

Alert Details
Many consumers will be using their mobile devices and computers to conduct their holiday shopping and so will the cyber scammers! Mobile device scams are a top threat this year based on the increase in mobile malware and malicious apps. Consumers should be aware of all potential threats in order to safeguard their funds and personal information this holiday season.

Let’s work together to keep the scammers away from credit union members. Potential scams and tips to be aware of are listed below.

Holiday Scams and Tips
• Watch for mobile malware – especially deals for black Friday and cyber Monday.
• Be cautious when looking for free mobile apps - may be an attempt to steal information.
• Watch for malicious screensavers, ring tones and e-cards.
• Watch for purchase offers of fake anti-virus software – this scam may trick you into purchasing the software.
• Secure your computer – at a minimum, have anti-virus, anti-spyware and a firewall.
• Remember to turn off your computer when you’re done shopping.
• Watch for social media scams – phony Facebook and Twitter sites or other online promotions and contests.
• Beware of scammers advertising popular holiday items.
• Check out the seller of items – research before you buy.
• Don’t fall for the mystery shopping scam asking you to shop for $XX dollars (ex: $100).
• Online coupon scams may ask for your personal or financial information using email.
• Holiday phishing scams – Don’t fall for emails, text messages or phone calls asking for personal or financial information.
• Monitor credit, debit and account numbers used for your holiday shopping to help identify any unauthorized usage.
• Vacation scams – don’t post holiday pictures until you are back home.
• Lighted parking lots – survey the parking lot surroundings. Make sure you have your car keys in your hands before entering the parking lot.
• If an offer or item sounds too good to be true, it’s probably a scam.
• Report scams to the Federal Trade Commission at www.ftc.gov or call toll-free 1.877.ftc.help (1.877.382.4357)

Fraud Alert: eMails Claiming to be from the FDIC

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) has received numerous reports of fraudulent emails that have the appearance of being from the FDIC. The emails appear to be sent from various "@fdic.gov" email addresses, such as "protection@fdic.gov," "admin@administration.fdic.gov," or "service@admin.fdic.gov."

The messages have various subject lines that read: "Update for your banking account" or "ACH and Wire transfers disabled," and "Banking security update."

The fraudulent emails are addressed to "Dear clients" and state "Your account ACH and Wire transactions have been temporarily suspended for your Security, due to the expiration of your security version. To download and install the newest Updates, follow this link. As soon as it is set up, your transaction abilities will be fully restored."

The message concludes with, "Best regards, Online security department, Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation."

These emails and links are fraudulent and were not sent by the FDIC. Recipients should consider the intent of these e-mails as an attempt to collect personal or confidential information, or to load malicious software onto end users' computers. Recipients should NOT access the link provided within the body of the emails and should NOT, under any circumstances, provide any personal financial information through this media.

Financial institutions and consumers should be aware that other subject lines and modifications to the e-mails may occur over time. The FDIC does not directly contact consumers in this manner nor does the FDIC request personal financial information from consumers.

Heat Wave Safety from The American Red Cross

Know What the Following Terms Mean:

Heat Wave: Prolonged period of excessive heat and humidity.
Heat Index: A number (in degrees Fahrenheit) that tells how hot it really feels when relative humidity is added to the actual air temperature. Exposure to full sunshine can increase the heat index by 15 degrees F.
Heat Cramps: Muscular pains and spasms due to heavy exertion. Although heat cramps are the least severe, they are an early signal that the body is having trouble with the heat.
Heat Exhaustion: Heat exhaustion typically occurs when people exercise heavily or work in a hot, humid place where body fluids are lost through heavy sweating. Blood flow to the skin increases, causing blood flow to decrease to the vital organs. This results in a form of mild shock. If not treated, the victim may suffer heat stroke.
Heat Stroke or Sunstroke: A life-threatening condition when the victim's temperature control system, which produces sweating to cool the body, stops working. The body temperature can rise so high that brain damage and death may result if the body is not cooled quickly.

Know What to do When a Heat Wave is Predicted/Happening

Slow down! Avoid strenuous activity. If you must do strenuous activity, do it during the coolest part of the day, which is usually in the morning between 4:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m.
Stay indoors as much as possible. If air conditioning is not available, stay on the lowest floor, out of the sunshine. Try to go to a public building with air conditioning each day for several hours. Remember, electric fans do not cool the air, but they do help sweat evaporate, which cools your body.
Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing. Light colors will reflect away some of the sun's energy.
Drink plenty of water regularly and often (even if you aren't thirsty). Your body needs water to keep cool.
Water is the safest liquid to drink during heat emergencies. Avoid drinks with alcohol or caffeine in them. They can make you feel good briefly, but make the heat's effects on your body worse. This is especially true about beer, which dehydrates the body.
Eat small meals and eat more often. Avoid foods that are high in protein, which increase metabolic heat.
Avoid using salt tablets unless directed to do so by a physician.

Signals of Heat Emergencies

Heat Exhaustion: Cool, moist, pale or flushed skin; heavy sweating; headache; nausea or vomiting; dizziness; and exhaustion. Body temperature will be near normal.
Heat Stroke or Sunstroke: Hot, red skin; changes in consciousness; rapid, weak pulse; and rapid, shallow breathing. Body temperature can be very high - as high as 105 degrees F. If the person was sweating from heavy work or exercise, skin may be wet; otherwise, it will feel dry.

Know What to do When a Heat Emergency Occurs

Heat Cramps: Get the person to a cooler place and have him or her rest in a comfortable position. Lightly stretch the affected muscle and replenish fluids. Give a half glass of cool water every 15 minutes. Do not give liquids with alcohol or caffeine in them, as they can make conditions worse.
Heat Exhaustion: Get the person out of the heat and into a cooler place. Remove or loosen tight clothing and apply cool, wet cloths, such as towels or sheets. If the person is conscious, give cool water to drink. Make sure the person drinks slowly. Give a half glass of cool water every 15 minutes. Do not give liquids that contain alcohol or caffeine. Let the victim rest in a comfortable position, and watch carefully for changes in his or her condition.
Heat Stroke or Sunstroke: Heat or sun stroke is a life-threatening situation. Help is needed fast. Call 9-1-1 or your local emergency number. Move the person to a cooler place. Quickly cool the body. Immerse victim in a cool bath, or wrap wet sheets around the body and fan it. Watch for signals of breathing problems. Keep the person lying down and continue to cool the body any way you can. If the victim refuses water or is vomiting or there are changes in the level of consciousness, do not give anything to eat or drink.

You can’t predict how or when your family may need to evacuate your home, but you can take steps now that may make it easier to apply for benefits, relocate, or rebuild.

Prepare an At-Home Records Box
In addition to assembling a disaster supply kit containing food, water, and medications, store the following records in a fireproof box that’s easy to grab in an emergency.
• A photo of every family member.
• Copies of important medical information, including your health insurance card, and immunization records for school-age children.
• Recent account statements for share draft (checking), savings, and investments, as well as retirement accounts.
• Pay stub and employee benefits information.
• An updated list of emergency contacts, including family members, health care providers, and financial advisors.
• A recent credit report.
• The declarations page from your homeowners, flood, life, auto, and other insurance policies, which should include your insurers’ contact information and the amount of your deductible.
• Copies of the deed to your home and a recent property tax bill, so that you can prove ownership for insurance claim purposes.

Off-site Storage

Consider storing some documents, particularly original legal documents, in a secure place away from your home. Include copies of these documents in your grab-and-go box, along with instructions for accessing the originals in a safe place away from your home.
• Wills and powers of attorney.
• Birth, death, and marriage certificates, and adoption papers.
• Social Security cards.
• Mortgage and other loan information.
• Car titles.
• Trust documents.
• Military records.
• Passport.

Brenda has served our Credit Union for 33 years and began her employment in 1978 with then, Fort Leavenworth Credit Union, performing teller, member service and computer operations roles. Brenda’s performance reviews formally reported her to be “effective and friendly,” and as a result, in 1984 she was promoted and assumed full loan responsibilities. Brenda was further promoted to the position of Loan Supervisor in 1989 and became the first Vice President of Lending in 1998. As a member of the Management Team, Brenda has earned the respect of her peers, Credit Union staff and volunteers, and more importantly, has earned the adoration of Credit Union members.

The Hard Truth About Payday Loans

Short on cash? Step right up and take out a payday loan. This increasingly popular line of credit will provide you the $100 or $200 you need to get by until your next paycheck.

The price? Only average interest rates of 470% APR (annual percentage rate).

Typically, a customer writes a postdated personal check to a check casher for the amount he wishes to borrow, plus the fee. The check casher holds the check until the customer’s next payday at which time the consumer can redeem the check with cash or a money order; allow the check to be deposited; or renew, or roll over, the loan by paying an additional fee. Companies frequently assess fees of $10 to $35 per $100 borrowed. If the fee is $20 per $100, a customer needing $100 would write a postdated check for $120, dated 14 days down the road.

Stated as an APR, the fees are shocking, the most common APR on $300 borrowed for 14 days was 521%. The fees climb even higher if a consumer rolls over the payday loan. Before long, escalating charges dwarf the original balance.

A member pays $120 to borrow $100 for one month from a payday loan company. But if he were to take out a $100 unsecured personal loan at 15% APR from his credit union, he would pay only $1.25 in interest if he pays back the loan within a month.

You’d end up paying 16 times more for the payday loan than the credit union loan and that’s before you take into account any other fees you might be charged.

Have extra blankets on hand. Ensure that each member of your household has a warm coat, gloves or mittens, hat, and water-resistant boots.

Assemble a Disaster Supplies Kit Containing--
First aid kit and essential medications. Battery-powered NOAA Weather radio, flashlight, and extra batteries. Canned food and can opener. Bottled water (at least one gallon of water per person per day to last at least 3 days). Extra warm clothing, including boots, mittens, and a hat. Assemble a Disaster Supplies Kit for your car, too. Have your car winterized before winter storm season.

When a Winter Storm WATCH is Issued...
Listen to NOAA Weather Radio, local radio, and TV stations, or cable TV such as The Weather Channel for further updates. Be alert to changing weather conditions. Avoid unnecessary travel.

When a Winter Storm WARNING is Issued...
Stay indoors during the storm. If you must go outside, several layers of lightweight clothing will keep you warmer than a single heavy coat. Gloves (or mittens) and a hat will prevent loss of body heat. Cover your mouth to protect your lungs. Understand the hazards of wind chill, which combines the cooling effect of wind and cold temperatures on exposed skin. As the wind increases, heat is carried away from a person's body at an accelerated rated, driving down the body temperature. Walk carefully on snowy, icy, sidewalks. After the storm, if you shovel snow, be extremely careful. It is physically strenuous work, so take frequent breaks. Avoid overexertion. Avoid traveling by car in a storm, but if you must... Carry a Disaster Supplies Kit in the trunk. Keep your car's gas tank full for emergency use and to keep the fuel line from freezing. Let someone know your destination, your route, and when you expect to arrive. If your car gets stuck along the way, help can be sent along your predetermined route.

If You Do Get Stuck...
Stay with your car. Do not try to walk to safety. Tie a brightly colored cloth (preferably red) to the antenna for rescuers to see. Start the car and use the heater for about 10 minutes every hour. Keep the exhaust pipe clear so fumes won't back up in the car. Leave the overhead light on when the engine is running so that you can be seen. As you sit, keep moving your arms and legs to keep blood circulating and to stay warm. Keep one window away from the blowing wind slightly open to let in air.

What to Do After a Winter Storm
Continue listening to local radio or television stations or a NOAA Weather Radio for updated information and instructions. Access may be limited to some parts of the community, or roads may be blocked. Help a neighbor who may require special assistance--infants, elderly people, and people with disabilities. Elderly people and people with disabilities may require additional assistance. People who care for them or who have large families may need additional assistance in emergency situations. Avoid driving and other travel until conditions have improved. Roads may be blocked by snow or emergency vehicles. Avoid overexertion. Heart attacks from shoveling heavy snow are a leading cause of deaths during winter. Follow forecasts and be prepared when venturing outside. Major winter storms are often followed by even colder conditions.

Seven Scams Targeting Small Businesses

(1/10/11 CUNA)–Small businesses should note seven scams, according to the Better Business Bureau (BBB).”Small-business fraud can come from internal threats, such as employee fraud, or from external full-time scammers,” said Alison Southwick, BBB spokeswoman. “Because small-business owners often lack the time and resources to fight fraud, they are a popular mark for any number of different scams” (LoneStar Leaguer Jan. 5).Credit unions can warn their business members about these scams:

Directory Scams–Usually the scammer will call a business to “update” the company’s entry in an online directory, or the scammer might lie about being with the Yellow Pages. The business is later billed hundreds of dollars for listing services it didn’t agree to or for ads which it thought would be in the Yellow Pages.
Office Supply Scams–Some scammers prey on small-business owners and hope they won’t notice a bill for office supplies–such as toner or paper–that the company never ordered.
Overpayment Scams–Businesses should be cautious if a customer overpays using a check or credit card and then asks the business to wire the extra money back to them or to a third party. Overpayment scams often target catering businesses, manufacturers, wholesalers and even sellers on sites like eBay, Craigslist and Etsy.
Data Breaches–No matter how vigilant a company is, a data breach can still happen. Whether it’s the result of hackers, negligence or a disgruntled employee, a data breach can have a severe impact on the level of trust customers have in a business.
Vanity Awards–While it’s flattering to be recognized for hard work, some awards are just money-making schemes and have no actual merit. If approached about receiving a business or leadership award, research the opportunity carefully and be wary if asked to pay money.
Stolen Identity–Scammers often will pose as legitimate company to rip off consumers. A company whose identity is stolen doesn’t necessarily lose money, but its reputation is potentially tarnished when angry customers ripped off by the scammers think the real company is responsible.
Phishing e-mails–Some phishing e-mails specifically target small-business owners with the goal of hacking into their computer or network. Common examples include e-mails pretending to be from the Internal Revenue Service that claim the company is being audited, or phony e-mails from the BBB saying the company has received a complaint. Companies receiving a suspicious e-mail from a government agency or the BBB should not click on the links or open attachments. Contact the agency or the BBB directly to confirm the legitimacy of the e-mail.

Two weeks ago, President Barak Obama appointed Harvard Law Professor Elizabeth Warren to the brand-new post of U.S. Consumer Protection Adviser. Last week, Warren gave her first speech – at a meeting of the National Association of Federal Credit Unions in Washington, DC.

Warren grabbed national headlines for railing against big banks – “The whole financial services area has gotten badly out of whack” – but she also spoke kindly about an often-forgotten alternative to big banks. Namely, credit unions.

“I think that consumers and credit unions should be on the same side of the line,” said Warren, who added that she’ s a “long-time member” of a credit union herself, along with nearly 92 million other Americans.

Warren’s not alone in her praise of credit unions – I’ve been urging viewers to join one since I started doing TV news 20 years ago. As I mention in my latest effort above, if you’re not a member of a credit union now, there are at least five reasons you should join one ASAP.

Lower rates on loans
Way lower, according to DataTrac, a national interest rate-tracking service – an average 1.5 to 2.0 percentage points lower than comparable loans from banks.

Higher rates on savings
I refer you to the study mentioned above, which shows savings rates higher by .2 to 1.0 percentage points on various types of savings accounts.

Better credit card deals
Buried in a 36-page report from the Pew Health Group from last October is this gem: “In general, the largest credit unions offered lower rates than did the largest banks. In July 2009, median advertised purchase rates were between 9.90 and 13.75 percent on surveyed credit union cards, approximately 20 percent lower than comparable bank rates.”

In addition, credit union credit cards tend to have lower credit card fees and fewer of them.

Easier to borrow
Says Fred R. Becker, Jr., president and CEO of the aforementioned National Association of Federal Credit Unions: “While banks were tightening their commercial lending, credit unions member business loans have increased nearly 17 percent since September 2008. In fact, through the third quarter of 2009, credit unions provided over 139,000 loans, for a total of nearly $28 billion to their members.”

In addition, while few national banks would make what’s called a “signature loan” – an unsecured loan guaranteed only by your signature – credit unions routinely offer this service to their members with good credit.

Convenience
You’d think that a small credit union without a million branches would be less convenient than a giant national bank. Not necessarily. Credit Unions have gone a long way toward making their online, phone, and in-person services as easy as possible. Many credit unions belong to a shared branching network that allows members of one credit union to conduct business at any other member credit union anywhere in the country – even overseas.

Lower fees
When it comes to banking fees, you’ll probably find better deals at credit unions than the giant commercial banks. Whether it’s fees to maintain a checking account, foreign ATM fees, or penalty fees for overdrawing your account, they’ll probably be lower.

Human beings answer the phone
I went to the same national bank branch for nearly 10 years, and the people there were wonderful – I’d never suggest that any one business automatically beats another when it comes to friendly employees. That being said, however, on those rare occasions when I needed to call my bank’s national customer service number to get a problem resolved – well, I probably don’t have to say more. Credit unions are typically smaller – should you have a problem, odds are much greater that you’ll be talking to live person much sooner.

How do you join?
So now that you’re convinced, how to do you join a credit union? In days past, you had to work at a specific company, or be a member of a specific organization or profession. And laws still require credit unions to have a defined group of members – but that defined group can be pretty broad. For example, of the approximately 8,000 credit unions nationwide, about 25 percent are community-based. In other words, to qualify as a member, you only need to live in the same city or county as the credit union. In fact, you might not even need to actually live in the area – working there or going to school there might be enough – even being related to another member could qualify you. In short, barriers to membership at some credit unions are about as high as the ones you’ll find at your neighborhood warehouse store.

1. Hangout with a child under 5-years-old: Being exposed to a sense of wonder vicariously through the eyes of a child will do you good. We think it takes a lot to make us happy; they think pink eye shadow and their favorite chewing gum is an awesome gift.

2. Forgive yourself and everyone around you: Holding grudges and blaming yourself drains you of energy and makes you no fun. Disagreements will happen during the holidays because everyone is on edge; consider the stress factor and don’t take it so personal.

3. Be of Service: Doing for others is a sure fire way to help you both. Don’t do it because you should, do it because it is a great thing to do. Make it personal or join a group for a community service project.

4. Be Still and Breathe: This works 365 days a year. Periodically throughout the day stop what you are doing, sit back, close your eyes and focus on your breathing. Ten in through the nose out through the mouth breaths will do wonders; ten minutes of it will bring relaxation and clarity to your world.

5. Be Realistic: Just because your mother made killer cinnamon rolls for the neighborhood and your father won the house decorating contest every year doesn’t mean you have to. Scale it down and make your own traditions that your children will have trouble living up to!

6. Get to Know a Puppy: I know a puppy and his name is Cratos. Just being around him makes me laugh and do ridiculously silly things, which makes me forget my troubles and alleviates stress. There is a reason research has found people with pets live longer, happier lives; it works.

7. Keep Your Exercise Schedule: The stressful holiday season is not the time to abandon your exercise routine. If you are bored, vary it a bit but do not quit. The time you save by not exercising will not make up for the positive results lost. I have dodged a lot of pounds over the years by exercising through December.

8. Choose Wisely: Three dinners and one open house on the same day? No way! Start making wise choices, without guilt, about what events you will attend in the month ahead.

9. Have a Holiday Movie Marathon: Sure, you can go with the classics like “It’s A Wonderful Life” or “Frosty the Snowman” but I like something a little different. “A Charlie Brown Christmas” is a good one because everyone is better off than Charlie Brown, right? Feeling really off beat? Then I would suggest: “Mixed Nuts” with Steve Martin or Tim Burton’s “The Nightmare Before Christmas”. Happy viewing!

10. Get Enough Sleep: Instead of staying up to finish wrapping presents or stay another hour at a party you really didn’t want to go to anyway, go to bed! Sleepy people are testy, grumpy, make a mountain out of a mole hill people and that is one thing you want to avoid this time of year.

Stay Home for the Holidays -- and Have a BLAST!

Gas prices and other budget busters have many families plotting new ways to get away from it all--by staying at home for a "staycation." You can find lots of local resources, many free or at low cost, to make this kind of event memorable.

Visit your library. You can get free or very cheap DVD rentals. Some libraries have museum passes that give you no-cost admission to many area museums and attractions.
Go straight to the source--almost all museums have free days or partial days. Find out when they are and arrange your visit around those days. See if your children's museum, science center, zoo, or aquarium has free times or free special events.
If you're near a college town, find out about free performances by music department faculty or students. If your community has an orchestra or symphony, see if it allows free access, even if it's for rehearsal time.
Treat your hometown like a vacation destination; check its web site and the local visitors' center to find neighborhood festivals and art fairs. Check out local factories and ask if they offer tours; a plant tour can be fascinating.
Ask yourself, what would I show a visiting friend? You'll discover things you never knew about your community when you approach it this way.
Make it a game to see how much fun you can have without spending a nickel. Have your kids compete to come up with ideas.

Your staycation may turn out to be so much fun that you'll repeat it even when finances take an upturn.

Can I use my card to get gasoline or rent a car?

When you pay at the pump, some stations check to see if you have funds to pay for a full tank (up to $75). If your card is declined even though you still have funds, tell the attendant how much gas you intend to buy and sign the receipt for that amount. Some rental car companies may require that you use a credit card to make a reservation, however your TravelMoney card is always welcome for final payment.

Can I pay for meals with my Visa TravelMoney card?

Yes, but be aware that some restaurants will verify that your card has enough funds to cover the purchase plus a 15-20 percent tip, or they'll decline the transaction. Only the amount you sign for will be deducted, so you can leave a tip with your card or in cash.

How do I buy something that costs more than the amount available on my card?

You can use a second payment method such as cash, check, or credit for the difference. Let the cashier know how much you will pay with each type of payment before you make your purchase.
What if I need to return an item I purchased?

Keep your Visa TravelMoney card even after you have used the funds on it. This way you will have it in case you need to make a return. Contact the merchant and follow the merchants return procedures. The value of the merchandise will be available on your card in three to seven days after the return. If you want to make a purchase but don't have enough money on your card, many merchants will allow you to make a partial payment.

Free or Low Cost Ways to Lower Heating Bills

Winter is fast approaching and so are those cold winter months. Follow a few of these tips to help keep heating costs low.

Lower your thermostat, even one degree makes a difference.

Close off unused spaces (attic, garage, basement, spare bedrooms, storage areas) or heat only those rooms that you use. If your heating system has vents, close off heating vents in unused rooms.

Reverse the switch on your ceiling fans, so they blow upward toward the ceiling. The reverse air circulation promotes heating efficiency in the winter.

Keep blinds and drapes open on sun-exposed windows during the day. Close these same drapes at night to help impede the escape of heat.

If possible, sign up for a budget plan with your heating provider. Although this will not reduce the actual yearly dollar amount, it will make your bill-paying more manageable when spread evenly over a 12-month period.

When you add energy-efficient items to your home, check for possible tax breaks or discounts on homeowner insurance policies.

Check with local utility companies for free energy audits. Certain energy saving devices may also be provided and installed free of charge.

Caulking and weather-stripping are relatively inexpensive and can save 5 to 30% on heating bills. Check for drafts, cracks and gaps. Some areas where cool air can penetrate include window frames, around doors, wall or window-mounted air conditioners, attic hatches, baseboards, switch plates, electrical outlets, and foundations.

Be sure to have adequate insulation in walls, ceilings, attics and basements. Seal and insulate water pipes and warm air ducts in unheated spaced.

Consider using an electric blanket in a cool bedroom; it's much less expensive than heating your bedroom to a toasty temperature. Install a low-flow shower head; it will use up to 50% less hot water.

Cover your water heater with an insulating jacket.

Smart Holiday Shopping Takes Planning and Control

You say it every year after the holidays: “Next year I’m going to spend less money.” It’s easy to get carried away. It can be just as easy to stay financially fit, even during the busiest shopping season of the year.

This year, try these holiday spending tips:

1. Budget your spending and set goals: Start with a realistic idea of how much you can spend on holiday gifts, food, travel, and so on. Add it up and really give some thought to what you can afford. Think about where you might cut back and stick to your budget.

2. Make a list: Shop from a list to avoid impulse purchases that leave you snowed under in debt at the end of the season.

3. Comparison shop: Take the time to find the best deal. Fight the urge to get your shopping over with as quickly as possible, and, for the procrastinator: Don’t wait until the last minute!

4. Trim your interest payments: If you must pay with a credit card, don’t use those department store cards with exorbitant rates. Use a card with a low-interest rate. Now is a good time to apply for Frontier CCU's low-rate Visa card!

The Federal Trade Commission estimates that as many as eight million Americans have their identities stolen each year, often because personal items are not disposed of properly. Frontier CCU encourages you to stop by and shred old bills and tax returns, medical records and other documents containing personal information. Cintas Document Management Corporation (a secure document destruction company) will be on hand to destroy the documents. These documents and forms are gold mines for ID thieves; shredding is a great way to protect yourself from becoming a victim.

The Shred Day is free and open to the public. Credit Union staff will be on site accepting donations to support Children’s Miracle Network. Any contributions received will be added to the annual CMN Skip-a-Payment program that generated almost $14,000.00 last year. CMN benefits both Children’s Mercy Hospital and KU Medical Center Pediatrics.

Do NOT enter any information when requested, end the call immediately. Frontier CCU will never call to request personally identifying information or card information.

Criminals are Email Phishing in Order to Commit Unauthorized ACH Fraud

NACHA (The Electronic Payments Association) has alerted the financial services industry of a recent phishing attack where the email is purportedly sent by NACHA. The subject line of the email states, “Unauthorized ACH Transaction.” The email contains a link to a fake web page infected with malware. Credit unions should advise employees and members to not click on the link. The email and the related website are fraudulent.

Phishing emails frequently contain links to fake websites infected with malware (malicious software), such as Trojan keyloggers.

Do not click on links contained in unsolicited emails from unknown parties, or from parties with whom you do not normally communicate, or that appear to be known but are suspicious or otherwise unusual.

NACHA itself does not process ACH transactions that flow to and from organizations and financial institutions. NACHA does not send communications to individuals or organizations about individual ACH transactions that credit unions originate or receive.

A phishing attack is targeting First Data clients in an effort to steal account log-in credentials. First Data is Frontier CCU's ATM and Check Card processor. Please email Fraud at Frontier CCU or call 913.651.6575 if you receive a phishing email that appears to be from First Data.

Phishing attacks use email or malicious websites to solicit personal information by posing as a trustworthy organization. Attackers may send emails seemingly from a reputable credit card company or financial institution that requests account information, often suggesting that there is a problem. When users respond with the requested information, attackers can use it to gain access to the accounts.

In this case, the emails in question purport to be First Data system communications and direct recipients to a fraudulent website with the First Data logo. Two specific examples of the e-mails received are below:

In an attempt to avoid becoming a victim of phishing attacks, do not use the links in an email, instant message, or chat to get to any web page if you suspect the message might not be authentic or you do not know the sender or recognize the user's handle/name. Instead, call the company on the telephone or log onto the website directly by typing in the Web address in your browser.

Please note that any communication coming from First Data will comply with strict standards for grammatical accuracy and that any communication displaying obvious errors, as in the examples above, should be treated with suspicion.

First Data is working tirelessly with various hosting entities, domain registrars, and law enforcement agencies to eliminate these fraudulent websites and apprehend the perpetrators of this phishing attack.

The emails are fraudulent, and may be an attempt to obtain confidential member information. NCUA does not solicit such information from credit union members. This is a phishing activity with no NCUA activity or approval. If you have received these emails please do not respond.

The United States Senate has been working on the regulatory reform legislation and moves forward this week with the filing and discussion of a number of amendments. There have been a number of amendments filed that are harmful to credit unions and affect the credit and debit card payment systems.

Credit unions nationwide are opposed to any amendment that would expand the scope of S. 3217, including new regulation of the card payment systems.

Please send a message to both of your Senators TODAY urging them to oppose any amendments to S. 3217, the Restoring American Financial Stability Act, which would affect debit and credit card-issuing credit unions and the card payment system.

A prewritten letter is available for your use at the Credit Union Grassroots Action Center, http://capwiz.com/cuna/home/ where you can personalize and send an email or print and fax a letter. Your message will be directed to the appropriate legislators based on the address you enter at the Grassroots Action Center site.

Issue: Credit and Debit Card Payment System

Background: Each time you use your debit or credit card, a merchant is paid immediately and the credit union that issues your card receives “interchange” through the card payment system. This interchange reflects a merchant's fair share of the costs of this convenient and beneficial payment system. At your credit union, interchange supports everything from re-issuing cards compromised by merchant data breaches to providing a call center to contact if your card is lost or stolen. In the coming days, the United States Senate will debate S. 3217, the Restoring American Financial Stability Act and a number of amendments have been offered which would make changes to the card payment system.

Credit Union Member Concerns: These amendments would be harmful to credit unions and consumers alike. Current amendments to S. 3217 threaten credit unions’ ability to offer debit and credit cards to their members and would allow merchants to interfere with consumer choice by arbitrarily varying the terms of card acceptance. The pending amendments are intended to disrupt the card payment system, with the goal of reducing the merchants’ financial responsibility for the benefits received from the card payment system. If you carry a credit card or debit card issued by your credit union, the card payment system enables the credit union to attract, retain, and adequately serve members and provide for their debit card and credit card needs with competitive and consumer-friendly products and services.

Scammers are active again, trying to obtain personally identifying information via text messages. A Frontier CCU member received such a text message -- and reports are surfacing throughout the nation -- with most attempts occurring over the weekend.

Unfortunately, the consumer interviewed for the report was not well-informed and provided his credit card information before realizing he had been scammed. If you don't recognize the sender, do NOT open the text message, simply delete.

Recent reports indicate that fake agents are showing up at Kansas homes, especially those of older Kansans, representing themselves as agents of the federal government selling "Obamacare" insurance policies.

TOPEKA, Kan. — While legislators, consumers and state regulators work to grasp the implications of the new federal health reform law, con artists are already trying to scam Kansas consumers with fake health care, according to Kansas Insurance Commissioner Sandy Praeger.

Recent reports indicate that fake agents are showing up at Kansas homes, especially those of older Kansans, representing themselves as agents of the federal government selling “ObamaCare” insurance policies.

“The federal government employees, as well as the rest of us, are sorting out the details of the new law,” Commissioner Praeger said, “and unsolicited contact such as this is a scheme to defraud you of your money.” Commissioner Praeger said that Kansans should always use caution and common sense when making insurance decisions.

“We always say, ‘Stop. Call. Confirm,’ ” Commissioner Praeger said. “If it doesn’t seem right, Stop the transaction, Call the Kansas Insurance Department and Confirm that any agent or insurance program is licensed to do business in Kansas. In this case, try to get a name and number of the person who is soliciting the business and turn the information over to us.”

2.Child Tax Credit You may be able to take this credit on your tax return for each of your children under age 17. If you do not benefit from the full amount of the Child Tax Credit, you may be eligible for the Additional Child Tax Credit. 8.Coverdell Education Savings Account This savings account is used to pay qualified educational expenses at an eligible educational institution. 9.Higher Education Credits Education tax credits can help offset the costs of education. The American Opportunity and the Lifetime Learning Credit are education credits that reduce your federal income tax dollar-for-dollar, unlike a deduction, which reduces your taxable income. Survey Response: "A Credit Union" Tops Big Banks

A credit union, any credit union, tops the nation’s big banks in meeting the needs and expectations of consumers, according to a leading think firm.

Respondents put “a credit union” atop the list for the third year in a row in Forrester Research’s annual Customer Experience Index , which included 12 banks and the generic credit union entry in its list.

The survey is based on responses from more than 4,600 U.S. consumers in late 2009 about their interactions with a variety of companies. They were asked to rank their dealings in three categories: “Meets Needs”, “Easy to Work With” and “Enjoyable.” The results were then melded into an overall score.

Only credit unions ranked “excellent”. Three banks finished with a “good” rating, led by SunTrust. “Very poor” ratings went to Bank of America and Washington Mutual.

Financial institutions ranked seventh among the 14 different industries represented in the 14 studied and rankings for several fell sharply this year, apparently because of turmoil in the industry.

Where the Scholarships Are, How to Develop a Scholarship Strategy

Although most student aid comes in the form of federal education loans and grants from colleges, scholarships—with their lure of free money—get a huge amount of attention from students and their parents. If you and your child decide to invest your time in a search for scholarships, it's important to have an organized system to find, apply for, and win scholarship money.

Start With a Personal Inventory
Most of the information your child will need to fill out a scholarship search questionnaire will be easy to come up with—year in school, citizenship, state of residence, religion, ethnic background, disability, military status, employer, membership organizations, and so forth.

Beyond those questions, your child should give some thought to academic, extracurricular, and career plans. Your child should ask:

Do I want to participate in a competition? If so, what are my talents and interests?
What subject do I plan to major in?
What career do I plan to pursue?
Do I want to apply for all types of aid or only scholarships?

Answers to these questions will help determine scholarship eligibility. Your child should take time to brainstorm thoroughly—the more personal characteristics your child discovers, the more scholarships she could potentially apply for.

Research Local Scholarships First
In general, the smaller the area a scholarship covers, the better your child's chances of winning. Your child should start at the high school counselor's office. Counselors will know about scholarships for students graduating from the local high school. They may also be aware of scholarships for residents of your town, county, and state.

Your child's next stop should be the college aid section of your local public library or bookstore. Look at a range of books about financial aid, including scholarship guides such as our Scholarship Handbook, available from our online store.

Then, it's time to start looking at large national scholarships such as Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC), National Merit, Gates Millennium, Siemens, Coca-Cola, and Robert Byrd.

Check Membership Organizations and Employers
Here's an area where you, as a parent, can really help out. Think of all of the organizations you have an affiliation with—religious, community service, fraternal, military, union, and professional—and find out if any of them sponsor scholarships for children of members.

Don't forget your employer. Many large companies offer scholarships or tuition reimbursement programs for dependent children of employees. Check with your human resources department to see if your company offers such programs.

Employers of students such as fast food chains, department stores, and supermarkets often provide scholarships. Awards related to student employment can come from unexpected sources. For example, there are a number of scholarships for golf caddies.

Use a Free Scholarship Search Service
A scholarship search company collects information on hundreds of awards and compares your child's student characteristics with scholarship restrictions. Based on answers to a questionnaire, your child will receive a list of possible scholarships. It is up to your child to decide which ones to try for.

You should never have to pay for scholarship information. If you are asked to pay a fee for "exclusive" scholarship leads, there's a good chance the scholarship service is really a scholarship scam.

Contact Your State Department of Higher Education
Almost every state has a scholarship program for residents—keep in mind, however, that awards are usually limited to students who attend college in-state. For example, the State of Florida offers Bright Futures scholarships to academically-qualified Floridians who decide to attend in-state colleges and universities.

Research Institutional Scholarships
Since a great deal of scholarship money is disbursed by colleges, it makes sense to research what kinds of scholarships are available at your child's favorite colleges. Investigate college websites, catalogs, and financial aid offices for this information. Institutional awards can be offered on a university-wide basis, or within a particular college or major. Eligibility for such awards can be based on merit, financial need, intended major, ethnicity, or a variety of other factors. Here are some questions your child might want to ask about these awards:

Are scholarships awarded automatically if a student matches certain criteria (such as GPA or SAT score)?

What is the application procedure?
What materials are required?
Is the award renewable?
What are the requirements to maintain the award?

Bye, Banks: Time to Join a Credit Union

Steve and Angela Olson, a police officer and high-school teacher in Dubuque, Iowa, were adrift in credit purgatory. They knew they could get a better rate on their home equity line, but ran into serious resistance at their bank. "We kept getting mailings to lower the rate, but every time we applied, the bank said our credit score was too low," says Steve. And it was a vicious circle: Each loan inquiry left a black mark on his credit report, making it even less likely the couple would get approved.

After weeks of failed refi attempts, they turned to Dupaco Community Credit Union - which approved their loan application in 30 minutes. The new 5 percent variable rate saved the Olsons more than $300 a month. "I wish we’d checked into a credit union a while ago," says Steve.

Given public opinion about banks right now - the label "vampire squid" was recently slapped on one particular investment bank, but it sums up the Q rating for the whole financial sector - this is a good time to be offering an alternative. But the nation’s 8,000 credit unions have more to recommend them than the mere fact that they are not banks. They also offer a fairly good value proposition, with higher savings yields and lower rates and fees. That may be why credit unions, which now have 92 million members, are seeing their fastest growth since 2003.

Lower Fees, Higher Yields
"In general, credit unions charge lower fees and loan rates than banks and pay higher savings yields," says Stephen Brobeck, executive director of the Consumer Federation of America. While banks are paying roughly 1.1 percent on one-year CDs, jacking up credit-card rates, and charging stiff rates on loans and high closing costs on mortgages (assuming they’ll even approve you for a loan), credit unions are paying 0.30 percent more on CDs, offering enticing credit-card and mortgage terms, and charging nearly two points less than banks on unsecured loans.

What’s more, credit unions are healthier: Banks were five times more likely to have failed during the economic downturn than credit unions. Just 25 credit unions went under (0.32 percent of the total) compared to 130 banks (1.56 percent).

In case you’re wholly unfamiliar with this breed of financial institution, a credit union is a nonprofit owned by its members. The financial structure helps explain why credit unions can pay more on savings and charge less on loans. "The credit union channels any excess funds back to its members," says Mark Wolff of the Credit Union National Association (CUNA). That trade group estimates that its members saved an average of $400 per person through lower loan rates and fees than by using banks. At all federally chartered credit unions and most state-chartered credit unions, the National Credit Union Administration insures deposits of up to $250,000 - the same limit as at federally chartered banks.

Although you can do much of your banking at a credit union, you may still want to keep a checking account at your bank for some services credit unions don’t always offer, and for ATM convenience. Credit unions tend to focus on the blocking and tackling of personal finance: savings, checking, credit cards, and loans for homes and cars. Only 22 percent of credit unions have safe deposit boxes and half provide money orders. And while your bank may have multiple branches locally, the credit union might have just one - or none at all.

Although only 59 percent of credit unions have ATM cards, those that do are generally part of ATM networks with machines at 7-Eleven, Walgreens, Costco, and at many banks. So if your credit union lets you swipe, you’ll probably be able to find a way to do it nearby. Credit unions with cards typically charge lower ATM fees than banks or no fees at all, though you’ll pay the ATM’s own fee, if there is one.

Choosing a Credit Union
The good news: It’s become much easier to become a member because about 10 years ago credit unions began loosening their requirements. You still need some sort of affiliation, though. Most credit unions are affiliated with places of employment; others are open to people who live in a specific community, county or states. A few are comprised of groups such as houses of worship and trade associations.

Seattle-based BECU, for instance, was once open only to Boeing employees and families (BECU stood for Boeing Employees’ Credit Union). Today, anyone who lives, works, worships, or attends school in a Washington state school district, can join, along with anyone with a Washington State Business License.

Pentagon Federal Credit Union, known as PenFed, traditionally served only members of the military, employees of defense-related government agencies, and their families. Today it’s also open to American Red Cross employees - and volunteers. It’s been making 60-month new-car loans at 3.99 percent, about half the national 7.87 percent rate charged by banks.

You can find a list of credit unions in your area using CUNA’s QuickFind online tool or by calling 800-358-5710. Typically, if you meet the membership requirements, you make a $5 to $20 deposit in a savings account - known at a credit union as a share account - and you’re in.

Mortgages, Credit Cards and Savings
The CUNA site’s Ratedex index compares the national average bank rate with credit union rates on a variety of financial products: savings, checking, and money-market accounts; one-year CDs; credit cards; car loans; unsecured loans; home equity lines; and mortgages. Here’s how credit unions stack up in the big categories.

•Mortgages: You won’t necessarily find a bargain mortgage rate at a credit union, but you’ll probably have an easier time getting a loan than at a bank and pay lower closing costs. Many credit unions make mortgages, with down payments on 30-year fixed-rate loans as low as 3 percent. Recently, banks were charging 5.34 percent, on average, for a 30-year mortgage compared with 5.31 percent for credit unions; the rate on a one-year ARM was 4.56 percent, compared with 4.26 percent at credit unions. And credit unions charged an average $2,280 in closing costs, versus $2,309 for banks, according to the latest CUNA survey.

•Credit cards: As MoneyWatch has reported, credit unions have some of the best deals on credit cards. We recently found 10 with variable-rate cards below 10 percent, including the Digital Federal Credit Union, whose Platinum Visa’s variable rate is as low as 8.5 percent. Digital Federal was originally chartered to serve the employees of the now defunct Digital Equipment Corp., but it now serves employees of more than 700 companies, from Doubletree Hotels to Texas Instruments, and is open to members of many nonprofits. You can search for low-rate credit union credit cards at Bankrate.com.

•Savings: Although credit unions typically pay savers more than banks, even their rates are pretty measly these days. The average money-market account yields .75 percent at credit unions and .47 percent at banks, for instance. Bankrate.com can help you find the best savings rates on money-market accounts and CDs. But you’ll still have to look up the particular credit unions online or call to learn whether you qualify.

Credit Unions, and Members and Employees, Support Haiti

On January 14, the Credit Union National Association (CUNA) made a $20,000 contribution to assist credit union employees, volunteers and members affected by the devastating earthquake in Haiti through the “CUAid.coop” program.

CUAid.coop is the national online giving center for credit unions. All CUAid.coop contributions are directed to the National Credit Union Foundation Disaster Relief Fund. CUNA made the contribution in conjunction with the World Council of Credit Unions (WOCCU).

According to WOCCU, there is an active credit union movement in Haiti made up of 175 credit unions serving more than 400,000 members. CUNA made its contribution on behalf of the American credit union movement to assist the Haitian movement to in turn help its members and its country endure this catastrophe.

FBI Issues Haitian Relief Fraud Alert

WASHINGTON (1/14/10)--Internet users who receive appeals to donate funds in the aftermath of Tuesday's earthquake in Haiti need to perform their due diligence before responding to the requests, said the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

Credit unions are advised to warn members that past tragedies and natural disasters have prompted criminals to solicit contributions that they claim are for a charitable organization or a good cause.

Before making any donation, consumers should use these guidelines, said the FBI.

•Do not respond to any unsolicited (spam) incoming e-mails, including clicking links contained within the messages;
•Be skeptical of individuals representing themselves as surviving victims or officials asking for donations via e-mail or social networking sites;
•Verify the legitimacy of nonprofit organizations by using Internet-based resources to assist in confirming the group's existence and its nonprofit status rather than following a purported link to the site;
•Be cautious of e-mails that claim to show photos of the disaster areas in attached files because these files may contain viruses. Only open attachments from known senders;
•Make contributions directly to known organizations rather than relying on others to make the donation on your behalf to ensure contributions are received and used for intended purposes; and
•Do not give personal or financial information to anyone soliciting contributions; providing that information may compromise your identity and make you vulnerable to identity theft.

The ads solicit current credit union members and offer $75.00 or more for their assistance in gaining membership for ineligible individuals. This scam is targeting credit unions and members across the country.

Do Your Finances Need Some First Aid?

The financial outlook is challenging for many people in today’s economy. But there are some things you can do to help weather the storm:

Take Action. Instead of being stressed over your situation, be proactive and take stock of your finances. Get organized and gather your bills, insurance, investment, paychecks and other account information.

Create a Budget. If you do not have a budget, create one. The budget is your spending plan and it should include all of your income and expenses. Once in place you should examine where your money is going. You can also make a back-up budget that can be used if you lose a source of income. You will then have an estimate of the amount of money you will have available during a financial crisis.

Prioritize Your Bills. Which ones are the most important – housing, transportation, and food, right? Which ones can be reduced? How can you eliminate some of your expenses? Track your spending to find out where you have some leaks.

Review Your Debt. Write down the type of debt (credit cards, student loan, auto loan), your balance, your monthly payment, and your interest rate. Include any alimony or child support that you have to pay each month.

Prepare for the Next Crisis. Your financial situation may go through ups and downs but you can always prepare for the future. Think about what factors put you into your situation and what you can do to mitigate the problem from happening again. You should continue to use a budget for household planning, cut expenses, and make saving a priority.

Ensure that receipts reflect the correct transaction amount.
When performing PIN transactions, ensure others are not capturing your PIN number.
When using a debit card, you may select “credit”, which requires a signature and extends the $0 member liability under the Visa / MasterCard association rules.
Review all accounts (checking, savings, credit card) activity daily.
Lower your credit line limit during the holidays.
When paper checks are converted at a merchant to an ACH, store voided checks safely to prevent counterfeit checks or unauthorized ACH transactions.
Be suspicious of emails from unknown parties; don’t open the email or click any links within them.
Access your credit union’s authorized website by typing the website into the address bar of web browser to avoid “spoofed” websites attempting to steal your information.
Shop online with trustworthy merchants who require security information such as address verification and the CVV2/CVC2 number on the back of your card.
When shopping in person or using an ATM, be aware of your surroundings and report any unusual activities to your credit union.
Never leave your purse, wallet, or cards unattended.
And finally, if an offer seems too good to be true, it probably is, so be cautious.

Shopping online during the holiday season can save time and minimize stress, but know a few simple rules before you dive into the world of online purchasing.

1. Only buy from familiar companies. Confirm the seller’s contact information in case you have questions or problems in the future. Know exactly what you’re buying. Carefully read the product description. Remember–if it seems too good to be true, it probably is.

2. Protect your privacy. Read and understand the company’s online privacy policy and keep any personal information, passwords, or PINs (personal identification numbers) private. Look for these signals indicating that you have entered a secure Web page:

A screen notice that says you’re visiting a secure site.
A closed lock or unbroken key in the bottom corner of your screen.
The first letters of the Internet address you are viewing change from “http” to “https”.

3. Pay safely. After you review all terms of the sale, such as cost for shipping, delivery date, and return policy, you are ready to buy. Credit or charge card payments offer consumers the most protection. Finally, print all transaction records and any other useful information pertaining to your purchase.

For just $10.00 you can skip your next scheduled loan payment with us. Just fill out the Skip-a-Payment form and we’ll set up your account to skip your next payment AND donate that $10.00 to the Children’s Miracle Network.

CMN is a credit union sponsored organization that raises funds for kids who are sick, and provides hospital care to children based on need and not the ability to pay. Dollars raised in this area stay here, helping kids through the KU Medical Center and Children’s Mercy Hospital.

When your payment is skipped your loan term is extended and you pick up with it on the next due date.

This Skip-a-Payment Program is good for one month’s worth of payments, whether you are on a monthly (one payment), semi-monthly, biweekly (two payments), or weekly (four payments) schedule.

A separate $10.00 Skip-a-Payment fee is required for EACH loan you desire to skip a payment on.

Also, the payment you wish to skip must fall no later than January 31, 2010.
